During the last century since the advent of industrial revolution, many activities have arisen that contaminate or pollute the environment. A contaminant or pollutant is something that causes harm to the environment and its residents. The advancement of scientific and technical knowledge has lead to the development of new products. However, many of these artificial substances either do not decompose easily in nature or decompose very slowly. Sources of hydrocarbons, such as motor oils and diesel fuels are good examples, as they take decades to decompose naturally. Other such substances, even those occur naturally, are sometimes found in unusual mediums or in too large of a quantity.

Generally, regulations govern the maximum quantity of a pollutant allowed in a given medium, i.e., 100ppm. If there is any amount beyond this concentration, the site is considered polluted or contaminated. This is why extensive research has since been conducted to permit the decontamination of certain sites so as to render them reusable. One of the possible solutions is bio-restoration, which is the cleanup of contaminated sites by organic methods.

Moreover, conventional contamination technology often involves the removal and transport to a landfill of the contaminated soil and silt. With increasing restrictions on landfills and waste disposal, it is also becoming increasingly difficult and costly to remove potentially hazardous materials.
